At IMS, these guidelines, known as the Five Precepts, form an integral part of daily life, and are adopted by everyone here, from retreatants and visitors to teachers and staff.<\/p>\n<p>All staff practice these precepts. This helps ensure an environment of safety, refuge and non-harming for all who come to IMS.<\/p>\n<h2>The Five Precepts<\/h2>\n<h3>On staff, we undertake the training<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>To practice compassionate action \u2013 to refrain from harming any living, sentient beings.<\/li>\n<li>To practice contentment \u2013 to refrain from taking what is not freely given. To not steal or \u2018borrow\u2019 without the consent of the giver; to accept what is offered and not try to change it or get more.<\/li>\n<li>To practice responsibility in all our relationships \u2013 including refraining from misusing sexual energy.<\/li>\n<li>To refrain from harmful speech \u2013 not to lie, gossip or use harsh or hurtful language.<\/li>\n<li>To care for ourselves \u2013 to refrain from clouding the mind and harming the body through the misuse of alcohol, drugs and other intoxicants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A core aspect of the Buddha\u2019s teaching is the importance of living by certain ethical guidelines.
